Annual Celebration
July 4, 2005
Historic Fort Ross houses
one of the oldest Orthodox chapels in the country. Originally built as a
trading post for the Russian American Company in the 1830s, a small
chapel was built in the fort to service the Orthodox in the region. St.
Innocent, the first bishop in America served there in 1836 while on a
trip to California.
Since then there has been
a continuous Orthodox presence and each year the Diocese of the West of
the Orthodox Church in America celebrates a Liturgy which gathers the
faithful from the region.
This year's celebration,
including the Divine Liturgy, was held on July 4. His Grace Bishop
BENJAMIN was present and served.
