His Grace Bishop TIKHON, Bishop of San
Francisco, Los Angeles and the West of The Orthodox Church in America
is pleased to announce that this year’s celebration at historic
Fort Ross has been set for Tuesday, July 4th at 10:00 AM.
Historic Fort Ross houses one of the oldest Orthodox chapels in the
country. Originally built as a trading post for the Russian American
Company in the 1830s, a small chapel was built in the fort to service
the Orthodox in the region. St. Innocent, the first bishop in America
served there in 1836 while on a trip to California. Since then there has
been a continuous Orthodox presence and each year The Diocese of the
West of the Orthodox Church in America celebrates a Liturgy which
gathers the faithful from the region.
This year’s celebration will begin at 10:00 AM with a Divine. A clergy
choir will sing the responses. A luncheon after the celebration will be
provided for a nominal charge.
Directions to Fort Ross are easy. It is located about two hours north of
San Francisco along Highway 1. Exit at Fort Ross State Park.
